WHAT WOULD YOU DO? Disaster Preparedness for the Community Physician (09MCG55D)

Whether it's an accident or an act of terrorism, a large-scale disaster will likely create challenges for community physicians in the recognition, management and disposition of affected patients. This educational session will review lessons learned from actual emergencies and prepare community-based clinicians to respond effectively within the uncertainty and unpredictability of an emergency situation.

Eric Auf Der Heide, MD, MPH, FACEP is a Medical Officer for the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, US Department of Health and Human Services.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for physicians, and other health care professionals in New Jersey who are involved in the care of persons with Public Health Emergencies.

STATEMENT OF NEED

A variety of networks and collaborations have been initiated to develop training courses and improve public health, laboratory, and health care infrastructure after September 11th. However. numerous needs assessments indicate that most health care professionals surveyed in NJ feel unprepared to meet their patients care needs and are unaware of what and to whom to report if a threat occurs, nor do they feel integrated into a response team network.

METHOD OF INSTRUCTION

Participants should read the learning objectives and review the activity in its entirety. After reviewing the material, complete the self-assessment test consisting of a series of multiple-choice and True/ False questions.

Upon completing this activity as designed and achieving a passing score of 70% or more on the self-assessment test, participants will receive a credit letter and the test answer key four (4) weeks after receipt of the self-assessment test, registration, and evaluation materials. Estimated time to complete this activity as designed is 2 hours.

PHYSICIANS: UMDNJ–Center for Continuing and Outreach Education is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
