Learning Objectives

After completing Part One and Part Two of this presentation, viewers will be able to:

  • Identify and describe the services available through FEMA's Crisis Counseling Assistance and Training Program
  • Identify the role of public health staffs in disaster preparedness and response activities
  • Identify the recommended public health and mental health interventions in disasters
  • Define cultural competency as related to the utilization of outreach strategies in engaging the community in a disaster response.

FACULTY

April Naturale, MSW, LCSW, ACSW is a licensed clinical social worker and a PhD candidate at New York University where she is studying the effects of secondary traumatic stress in social workers and trauma counselors who respond to disasters. Ms. Naturale recently served as the Director of Network Development for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline and is the former Statewide Director for Project Liberty, the crisis counseling program launched by the New York State Office of Mental Health in response to the World Trade Center attacks of 9/11/01, She is currently working on the response to Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and Wilma in the Gulf States and provides consultation and training regarding disaster response and planning nationally and internationally. Ms. Naturale also has a private practice in Montclair, New Jersey.

Target Audience

This activity is designed for public health educators, health officers, case managers, social workers, mental health counselors, nurses, physicians, and other healthcare providers.

STATEMENT OF NEED

Because New Jersey has a diverse population of many races and ethnicities, there is a need and interest in assuring that in times of disasters all residents of the State understand instructions and are counseled appropriately.

METHOD OF INSTRUCTION

Participants should read the learning objectives and review both videos in their entirety. After reviewing the videos, complete the self-assessment test consisting of a series of multiple-choice and True/ False questions and submit the course evaluation.

Upon completing this activity as designed and achieving a passing score of 70% or more on the self-assessment test, participants will receive a printable credit letter. Estimated time to complete this activity as designed is 3.0 hours.

PHYSICIANS: UMDNJ–Center for Continuing and Outreach Education is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. UMDNJ–Center for Continuing and Outreach Education designates this educational activity for a maximum of 3.0 AMA PRA Category 1 credit(s)™. Physician should claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation

CEUs: UMDNJ-Center for Continuing and Outreach Education certifies that this program meets the criteria for up to 0.3 Continuing Education Units (CEUs), provided the activity is completed as designed.
